Nothing is better than the feeling of sand in your toes as you enjoy marshmallows on a stick.
Every year the Anopi Nation visits the Leo Carrillo State Park campsite for three days of outdoor fun. The entire Nation gathers to play on the beach, ride bikes, hike, play sports and huddle around the campfire. The beach has tide pools, coastal caves and reefs for exploring. Giant sycamores shade the main campgrounds. The park also features backcountry hiking.
On Saturday, the Anopi Nation plans group activities, which could include hikes or contests. After dinner, we head to the outdoor auditorium for goofy skits full of one liners, juvenile puns, and performances that make Hollywood’s finest actors more than a little jealous.
The campground opens at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Everyone needs to leave their campsite by 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The gate is locked from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. No entry to the park after 10:00 p.m
What to expect at Fall Camp
Leo Carrillo State Park (located near the Los Angeles and Ventura County border) is situated right next to the beach. Each site is on dirt and is well maintained. There are plenty of bathrooms and showers located in buildings around the campsite.
Each campsite can accommodate up to three cars with plenty of additional parking available in an overflow lot near the park’s entrance. There is a paved road that encircles the campsite, which is generally filled with kids biking, riding their scooters and skateboarding. Please Note: Cars also use this access road.
The Anopi Nation provides one formal group meal on Saturday night. Your tribe should plan and provide all additional meals.
Remember, the YMCA has a strict no alcohol policy. As this is a YMCA sponsored family event, alcohol is not welcome. Additionally, please remember to take home all recyclable items and dispose of them properly.
